Choosing your size and base

Two rules, either works. Match the shade's diameter to the height of the base, or double the diameter of the base. If you're between sizes, go larger. A bigger shade casts more light, and the room looks better for it.

The 10" sits well on the 29cm Simplicity base. The 14" pairs with the 39cm Simplicity and the 42cm.

Sit where you'd usually sit. The bottom of the shade should land near eye level, with the bulb fitting hidden from view.

The same cloth as the Broadway Check Cushion: three weights of blue, painted freehand on cream, made in the UK. Pleating bends the check around each fold, so the pattern moves as you pass rather than sitting flat, and no two shades fall quite the same. Unlit, it reads crisp against a wall; lit, the cream warms and the blues deepen. Character and calm woven in the UK.

Pair it with the Broadway Check Cushion and the cloth runs from the sofa to the lamp, giving the space a sense of continuity, allowing the pattern to travel naturally through the scheme while still feeling relaxed and collected.

The Craft

The check was painted freehand for the Broadway range, then printed onto cloth woven in the UK. Each shade is pleated, stitched, and finished by hand in a UK workshop, so the fall of the check varies slightly from shade to shade, as it should.

Care

Folded and stitched by hand, your shade may take a day or two to settle once unpacked. Dust along the pleats with a soft brush. Use an LED bulb, warm white, 60W equivalent at most.
